A song to say goodbye ...

Lisa is back!!! I'm soooo happy, but it was an adventure to get her back here to Krefeld. On Christmas eve her flight from Amsterdam to Düsseldorf was cancelled and our family spontaneously decided to go and pick her up from Amsterdam airport even though there was heavy snow fall and we didn't know for sure if we could get through to her. So we prepared for a night out on the autobahn with food and blankets. Thank God we arrived in Krefeld in time to have a special Christmas.

It was such a happy Christmas Eve, believe me ... I can't remember to ever had a better Christmas than this year!
Back home I improvised a Christmas dinner while the kids decorated the tree and Achim took Lisa's friend Nathalie to her parents. They were very emotional and thankful too.

I hope you all had a nice Christmas and I wish you a very Happy New Year 2011. We will go to Munich to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends on wednesday. Lisa and I we will think about how to continue our blog.

I'm not sure how, but you'll see. I will start a further education as a yoga teacher next year, so I guess I won't have much time left. But never say never ... I'll try to stick to this project with my talented daughter. I'm sooo proud of my kids!!! xxxx

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas ...

... looks like we are lucky this year. It began to snow last night and still does. Hopefully Lisa will get here, but I'm sure we will find a way. Even if I have to drive to Amsterdam to pick her up! I'm so much looking forward to seeing you again, Lisa!!! I'm soooo happy!!! I know it must be hard to say Good bye, but it won't be the last time you are in Scotland. We will travel there together, promise me! When I saw the photos you took I fell in love with the country. Can't wait! Well, what about skyping?? You haven't answered, sweetie. I'm off to work now, but will be back around 8 pm - 7 pm uk ... lets say 8 uk ?? xxxx If we can't speak, have a safe trip back home, my love! We'll be at the airport and Charlotte will be with us! xx

I shivered like a child ...

Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside
... (Inbetween days, The Cure)

The cold snap is still there to keep us busy. But hey, it's winter and there is supposed to be snow. We complain and say, we are not prepared ... hmmm, I am and I like the snow. The only thing is, I want my baby home for Christmas!!
Please, cross your fingers, that Lisa will be able to fly back to Düsseldorf via Amsterdam on Friday. Christmas without her would be very, very sad! xxxx
BTW The sign on the photo says 'Fresh soft serve ice cream' ;-)
Lisa, hope you are alright ... didn't hear from you. Can we skype on Thursday eve? xx

Now warning lights are flashing down at Quality Control

As I have already mentioned yesterday we had a private guided tour at the Zeche Zollverein. The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (German Zeche Zollverein) is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

For decades starting in the late 1950s, the two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant (erected 1957−1961, closed on June 30, 1993), ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. Shaft 12, built in Bauhaus style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the “most beautiful coal mine in the world”.

Unfortunately the cold snap affected the well planned tour and we were only six people who took part at this guided tour. We waited for almost an hour and then started for the shortened tour version.

I try to summarise what we learned:
In 1928 shaft 12 was constructed designed as a central mining facility. That's the shaft we visited. Pics you find on Picasa.
It was designed by the architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer and quickly gained notice for its simple, functional Bauhaus design with its mainly cubical buildings made of reinforced concrete and steel trusses. The shaft's characteristic Doppelbock winding tower in the following years did not only become the archetype of many later central mining facilities but became a symbol of the german heavy industry. Whilst this symbol may have slowly been forgotten when the German heavy industry started diminishing in the second half of the 20th century, it was this shaft and especially its characteristic winding tower that were to become a symbol of the Ruhr area's structural change.

There is a huge contrast between the site seen as a beautiful, nice monument and the men working there under extreme conditions. While the shaft was built to impress and to represent the power of the owners, the working men for example were not allowed to show up at the front entrance on pain of penalties such as instant dismissal.

Today the whole complex is a large museum of industry and art. The picture you see on the left side is the entrance to the visitor center. A very steep, impressive, nicely illuminated escalator leads up to the meeting point where all the guided tours start off.

It's funny too often you only go out and visit the already existing nice places in your neighbourhood when you expect friends and want to show them the characteristic sights of your area. What a shame! xxxx

Nobody said it was easy ...

Today I post just another winter picture of 'my' forest. I didn't have time to work on the few pictures I took yesterday. Achim's Christmas party consisted of a guided tour to the 'Zeche Zollverein' in Essen, an old closed coal mine - now it's a World Heritage Site - and a lovely dinner at the Rhinetower in Düsseldorf. I'll try to post them tomorrow. Sorry, but I was very busy today. Lisa, we'll talk at 10.00 uk! I'm looking forward to it. Counting the days... only 6 left till I'll see you again. Can't wait!!! xxxx

Footsteps in the hall, it was you, you ...

Actually it was me, me, me .... in the snow ;-)
Let me tell you a little story to the picture on the left:

I got a pedicure at my friend's the other eve. With french you don't have a problem, cause the nail varnish dries quickly under a heat lamp. This time I wanted my toes to be painted with red nail varnish. The drawback is that the varnish takes very long to dry. I had my flip flops with me and I put them carefully on. But we are having a real winter in Krefeld this year with snow and frost and everything. So I suppose it must have been a funny picture... imagine me in my woolen coat, scarf, gloves and beanie with only flip flops on my feet walking through the snow. Yes, of course it was only the short walk to my car and back from the car to our front door.
Anyway, it was a laugh. Then I saw some foot prints in the fresh snow on the street and I had a nice idea. I got my flip flops off as well and printed my foot steps beside the ones already existing. You can see them documented on the photo. xxxx

Salvation lets their wings unfold ...

so when I’m lying in my bed
thoughts running through my head
and I feel that love is dead
I’m loving angels instead
... ( Angels, by Robbie Williams)

I saw this on our window early this morn and I immediately thought about wings and angels. For me angels are good thoughts. Thoughts that protect us and guide us.

So today I always had this feeling of being uplifted and that put a smile on my face every time I recalled the image on our window.
I told you, I'm in this special Christmas mood already ;-) On my way to work I heard the new Coldplay Christmas song on the radio, that added to it. But I like it .... so be a bit patient with me. I will come down soon enough. xxxx

Where it's so white as snow ...

Running through a field where all my tracks will be concealed
and there is nowhere to go...
(Snow, by Red Hot Chili Peppers)

You guess already why I post this picture today, don't you? Yes of course, the snow is back in Krefeld. That's what I was looking and hoping for. I love to run through the snow covered landscape. It's silent, soooo beautiful ... and I most often get into a state of meditation while running. Sounds crazy, but it helps to get your head clear and to overcome the stress these days.

Lisa, I miss you like crazy!!! I'm so much looking forward to seeing you in only TEN days.
What do you think? Will we continue to write our blogs or should we just stop writing? Do it together? What for? To whom .... another project?
Good ideas are appreciated and welcome!
Have to go to bed. It was a long and busy day. Good night and sleep tite, my sweetie! xxxx

I can't be alone tonight...

Here comes a girl with long brown hair, who can't be more than seventeen
She sucks on a red popsicle as she pushes a baby girl in a pink carriage...
(Susan's House by Eels)

Dream in a dream. Real, unreal. This is a surreal picture. And I love it, because it betrays the observer and you often look at it wondering what it is that is displayed. What is reality and what is deception.

The photo was taken in Duisburg. I was sent there to pick up some parcels for my boss and on my way I noticed this awesome, special motif. xxx

Can't keep my hands, my hands, my hands out the cookie jar...

I got a thing for Milano, Biscotti Italianos
And I never turn down some Oreos if you got them
Butter Pecan Puerto Rican
Or them Oatmeal Raisin Asians
Hazelnut Brazilians, Macadamia Caucasians ...

I promised to send some pictures of our baking orgy yesterday.

Lisa, I'm soo sorry you couldn't be with us. We all missed you and thought a lot about you! To make up for it, we took some pictures and you will get cookies as well. I'll send a nice little parcel and if you still like to bake with me in December during Christmas I'll be more than happy to do so.

We were busy as bees - Tanja, Jörg and Dinah came over to help us - we worked hard to produce an eclectic assortment of christmas cookies. I'll post the other pics on Picasa. See for all the various plates of biscuits. We prepared dinner simultaneously together with a tarte au citron for dessert.

I must say we were a good team and we had a lot of fun. Finally after we had finished the very last tray of cookie dough everybody seemed to be overcome by fatigue. Maybe the wine and the tasting added to this state. Anyway we will all remember this nice winter eve.
As I already mentioned in my last post the snow has melted away completely in Krefeld, but it's getting colder again each day. The weather forecast predicts new snow for next week and I'm looking forward to it. White Christmas is one of my dreams. Yes, ... I'm hopelessly romantic.
December is a busy month... as every year, I know ;-) I still have to buy some last pressies, to go and get a tree, to attend the Christmas party, write a couple of cards I forgot and organise our Christmas Dinner. I miss you, Lisa! You are such a big help and this year I have to do it all on my own.

I tend to get into this musing mood these days. I look retrospectively at this year, try to get things straight and see everything under a warm and forgiving veil ... hmmmm sounds weird I know, but I like this sentimental Christmas atmosphere.

Cause the line between ...

Wrong and right
Is the width of a thread
From a spider’s web
The piano keys are black and white
But they sound like a million colours in your mind ...

(Spider's web by Katie Melua)

Snow melted away, we are going through a warmer phase before it'll be cold again next week. Today we had our annual baking orgy with some friends ;-) Sorry, Lisa. Next year you can join us again. I took some pics and will post them tomorrow. xxxx

Big Brother's watching us...

with eyes in the sky
I think I've had enough of asking why...

(Big brother's still watching, by The Tubes)

Isn't it a funny picture? I took it in the basement of our shop... very old building and wiring! I love to see the world with my eyes - I discover exciting, awesome, beautiful and colourful moments everywhere. Astonishing enough I'm best when I'm sad. Maybe I need these moments then, to make me happy again, to reconcile me with my inner self. I often see things other people don't recognise at first glance, because I like to go into details, I like to zoom in and pay attention to minor things.

Lisa, I didn't get the info of the insurance company today. Will have to call again on Monday. Did you talk to Kate yet? I have transferred the money though. Can we talk on Sunday morning? Would be nice!!! Love ya! Mum xxxx

Same, same but different...

Yesterday I saw a film with this title about a love story between a german student and a cambodian girl. She has to work as a prostitute to earn money for her family. And she is finally infected with aids. I don't want to tell the whole story, but it made me think a lot. The images are meaningful and nice and I love the music. In short: a surprisingly deep tale of love against all odds, not as depressing as some of you may think, and lacking only in a supporting cast to make the story as believable as it actually - being based on a true story - is.
This picture reminded me of the film. I like the elephant and the different patterns. Found it on a wrapping in an asian food store. xxx

Let the winter sunshine on...

Let me feel the frost of dawn
Fill my dreams of flakes of snow
Soon I'll feel the chilling glow...

(Snowblind, by Black Sabbath)

Nature's christmas ornaments. This picture was taken in Düsseldorf at the riverside of the Rhine. Winter's colours and nature's beauty I adore it and see it everywhere at the moment. What a comfort to run through this winter wonderland scenery, when sounds are absorbed by the snow. Christmas lights glow from every house. And it smells of Christmas bakery and mulled wine from Christmas markets ... I'm hopelessy romantic! xxx

BTW I love the Scotish Shortbread, Lisa. They taste delicious! I like the strong taste of butter... yummy!!!

Dienstag, 7. Dezember 2010

And I want to thank you for giving me...

the best day of my life ... (Thank you, by Dido)

... and for the lovely shortbread fingers, Lisa!!!! I looooove them, you know I have a sweet tooth :-)

I took this pic some days ago before we had frost all day. Today it was flipping cold. I ran and it felt like ice scating only without blades. I couldn't make progress. Two steps meant to take only one. Anyway I enjoyed it no end! xxxx

Lisa, I love ya! Thanks for your text last night and for your pressie! xx

Mr. Postman look and see...

if there's a letter (oh yea) in your bag for me
I've been waiting a long long time...!!!!

But not any longer, the parcel finally arrived. Just five minutes ago. Patrick is sooo happy. He said, to use his own words, "Thanks a lot... I love you, my cute little sister!!!"

He has been asking us every day, if the parcel had turned up. Lisa, he is already wearing the cool shirt and the wristband. Look at this pic! And tomorrow it's my turn to open a pressie of the advent calendar :-) Can't wait! xxx

You say it's your birthday...

... I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you...!!!
(Birthday, by The Beatles)

Yes, it's Patrick's birthday today! On the picture on the right he is playing with his lovely cousins at the birthday party of my mum. She gave her party in a beautiful timber framed house. Outside was a fireplace where you could get mulled wine to warm your fingers and throat ;-)

And it's Saint Nicholas Day as well. Lisa, I will send you a small Santa Claus, sorry, forgot about it, and biscuits - enough for everybody - and you can tell your host family and Kate what kind of customs we have in Germany. Wasn't aware that we differ that much, but it's very interesting to learn about it! I'm curious!!!
I'm looking soooo much forward to seeing you on Christmas Eve, Lisa! You will have lots of stories to tell us, I'm sure! xxx

And it sure been a cold, cold winter...

We went to Lahde this weekend to celebrate my mum's birthday.

There was a lot of snow which fitted perfectly to this christmas 'Vorfreude' feeling. My mum lives just opposite the church of Lahde in a nice little flat. We stayed at my sisters, so we walked along the main road of our hometown to visit my mum. It was wonderful! That reminds me, this year I haven't had a snowball fight yet.

The house of the second picture looks for me like a 'Hexenhaus' or gingerbread house, the one which you read about in Hänsel und Gretel.

Unfortunately there was no time for us to walk at the riverside of the Weser. I would have loved to take pictures, but next time I will!

I had a dream, last night I was blind ...

And I couldn’t see
Colour of any kind ...

But when I awoke I still could see ;-) These are the colours of xmas. Little riddle: Imagine what this is!

Sorry, today only a quickie, cause we are dashing. We should be already on the autobahn by now. My mum's birthday is today and she organised a big party. So I will tell you more about it, when we are back. Have an awesome weekend!!!

You're frozen when your heart's not open...

Still very cold and it's snowing again. Nature is soooo beautiful!!! Look at the colours and the sturctures.

... You only see what your eyes want to see ...

In my little teabag I found the coverpage of my book today. The title is 'The perfect tea'. Lol... doesn't sound very exciting. Maybe I should try and figure out my own story. I like to be inventive.

Today it's the birthday of my best friend and I can't celebrate with her... grrr.. too bad! I'm working and this eve I will be taxi driving. Pick up Achim from the airport - hope his flight won't be cancelled - and Patrick from his boy scouts meeting. But after that I will drop a nice pressie for her. And when we're back from my mum I plan a girls' eve!! xxx

BTW Lisa, your parcel is still misssing. But don't worry, it's no problem for me to wait and I'm very glad that ours arrived at least!

Mittwoch, 1. Dezember 2010

As time goes by...

The count down started today. I already mentioned it this morn. What I haven't told you yet is, I got a tea bag calendar in addition to my chocolate advent calendar. Every day I open a tiny bag with a miniature text and on christmas eve I will have collected a little book. I'm curious ....

Lisa, thanks for your beautiful xmas card!!! I like it very much! You sound very happy.

Tomorrow I will tell you what Patrick's present consisted of. Achim received another interesting calendar. Yes, it's like these Russian dolls. Whenever you open one, you only find another one in it ;-)

Today was bitter cold. Felt like -10 degrees Celsius at least! Tomorrow more snow is expected. And on Friday we will visit my mum. It's her birthday and she planned a big party this year.
xxxx

Come closer and see, see into the trees...

December 1st, I opened my chocolate advent calendar. Yummy, I definitely have a sweet tooth. It was Achim's turn today to get a pressie. Lisa, you have to ask him what he found ,-) Surprise! Tomorrow Patrick will receive one from Achim and on the 3rd I'll be the lucky one. Hopefully your parcel will have arrived till then. Haven't had time to go to the post office yet to claim the one they couldn't deliver. I work full time at the moment, cause my colleague is in hospital. So most of the day nobody is at home.

It's very cold out here today and it stopped snowing. Too bad I really enjoy the snow! The picture was taken some days ago on my way to work through the Stadtpark. The Germans and their forest ... love it;-) Have to dash. Need more time to get to town these days due to the snowy, icy streets. xxx
